Vivienne Adkins, a former vitaic soldier with implants that amplify her strength, speed and give her the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, finds her family stricken by a novel virus.
When a terroristic organization, known as the Brotherhood of Illumination, claims responsibility for unleashing the virus upon the world, she gears up and reunites with her old military squad to bring them to justice. The Brotherhood, however, won't go down without a fight.
Will her team and her indomitable will be enough to stop the Brotherhood and save humanity?
Vitaics are soldiers who have been augmented by cybernetics that enable them to wield the body's naturally occurring electromagnetic energy to manipulate magnetic fields. Although powerful, they have their limits. If they use too much of their body's energy, they will ultimately die.
The first vitaics were created during the height of the third world war. After the initial nuclear attacks on the world powers, the frontline combat was brutal. Many soldiers lost limbs and were taken out of the fight. In desperation, the United States and other allied powers created the C.R.U.S.A.D.E.R. Program. The C.R.U.S.A.D.E.R. Program, standing for Cybernetic Reflex Upgrades and Strength Amplification Derived from Electromagnetic Resouces, utilized cybernetic prosthetics to get the disabled soldiers back into the fight. The prosthetics bolstered the soldier's strength, speed and allowed them to manipulate magnetic fields. These first vitaics, or the Crusader Mark 1's as they were called, were such a success that the allies quickly began developing the Mark 2's.
The Crusader Mark 2's were soldiers who volunteered to receive experimental implants throughout their entire body. The procedure was extremely dangerous and early mortality rates were significant. The continued the program, however, justifying that for every vitaic they were able to create took the place of an entire company of soldiers. Unfortunately for the Mark 2's, it was discovered shortly after the end of the war that the process of implanting the cybernetics also led some vitaics to develop post-procedural psychosis. The Mark 2's tended to be more powerful than the Mark 1's or Mark 3's.
The allied forces quickly perfected the Crusader Program, which culminated in the creation of the Mark 3's. The implant process, although still dangerous, yielded much higher success rates and the prevalence of the post-procedural psychosis was reduced dramatically. These Crusaders became indispensable and combined with the Mark 1's and Mark 2's, led to the resolution of the war.
